Plantar Fibroma

Plantar fibroma is a benign nodule which develops within the plantar fascia (arch) of the foot.

Symptoms

Plantar fibroma is a noticeable lump which develops within the arch of the foot. The benign mass may or may not be painful. The mass may enlarge or additional lumps may form over time.

What to Expect When You See the Doctor

To diagnose a plantar fibroma your doctor will examine your foot. An Ultrasound, MRI or biopsy may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatments

Treatment of painful lesions may include cortisone injection, physical therapy with iontophoresis and/ or surgery to remove the mass. Due to the high incidence of recurrence after surgery, continued follow-up with the foot and ankle surgeon is recommended.
